9) on the flywheel aligns with the alternator
cover cutout (B).
b. Rotate the crankshaft another 290° clockwise
until the I-mark on the flywheel (A, Figure
11) aligns with the cutout in the alternator
cover (B).
c. Make sure the timing mark on the front cam
sprocket plate (A, Figure 12) aligns with the
pointer on the front cylinder head (B).
9. Make sure the appropriate cylinder is at TDC on
the compression stroke by pressing each rocker
arm. Both the intake and exhaust rocker arms
should have free pay. If both rocker arms do not
have free play, rotate the engine an additional 360°
until they do.
10. Remove the two mounting bolts (A, Figure
13), then remove the cam chain tensioner (B) and
gasket from the rear of the cylinder. The air filter
housing bracket (C, Figure 13) comes out with the
chain tensioner on the front cylinder.
11. Remove the alternator cover as described in
Chapter Five.
12. Hold the flywheel with a sheave holder.
13A. When servicing the rear cylinder head, re-
move the cam sprocket bolt (C, Figure 10) along
with its washer.
NOTE
A cam sprocket plate is not used on
the rear cylinder.

13B. When working on the front cylinder, remove
the cam sprocket bolt (C, Figure 12), washer and
the cam sprocket plate (D).
14. Slide the cam sprocket (A, Figure 14) from the
camshaft and remove the sprocket from the cam
chain.
CAUTION
If the crankshaft must be rotated with
the cam sprocket removed, pull up on
the cam chain and keep it taut so the
chain remains meshed with the
