f. Turn the universal joint over and repeat
substeps d-f for the opposite bearing.
15. Install the bearing housing bolts (A, Figure 45)
and secure the speed sensor bracket and bearing
housing to the crankcase. Apply Yamaha Bond
1215 or an equivalent sealant to the threads of the
bolts and torque the speed sensor bracket bolts to 25
N•m (18 ft.-lb.).
Inspection
1. Inspect the gear on the end of the middle driven
shaft for galling, pitting or chipped teeth. If there is
any damage replace the middle driven shaft and the
middle drive shaft as a set.
2. Inspect the splines on the middle driven shaft. If
damaged, replace both the middle drive and middle
driven shafts.

3. Inspect the inner splines of the universal joint. If
the splines are damaged, replace the universal joint.
Also inspect the outer splines on the drive shaft.
They may also be damaged.
1. Remove the engine, separate the crankcase, and
disassemble the cases as described in Chapter Five.
2. Install the middle gear backlash band (Figure
49) onto the middle drive shaft assembly.
3. Set a dial gauge against the backlash band so the
plunger sits 68.2 mm (2.69 in.) from the center of
the middle drive shaft. See Figure 50.
4. Rotate the universal joint and read the backlash
on the dial gauge. The middle gear backlash should
be within the range specified in Table 1.
