pad is worn or damaged, also inspect the cam lobe
for scoring, chipping or flat spots.
3. Inspect the valve adjuster (B, Figure 51) where
it rides on the valve stem. Replace the adjuster if it is
scratched, pitted or shows signs of blue discolor-
ation.
4. Measure the inside diameter of the rocker arm
bore (Figure 52). Replace the rocker arm if the bore
exceeds the service limit specified in Table 2.
5. Measure the outside diameter of the rocker arm
shaft (Figure 53). Replace the rocker arm shaft if its
outside diameter is less than the service limit (Table
2).
6. Calculate the rocker arm-to-shaft clearance by
subtracting the shaft outside diameter from the
rocker arm bore inside diameter. If the clearance is
less than the service limit (Table 2), replace the
defective part.
7. Inspect the threads of each rocker arm bolt (Fig-
ure 45) for stretching or other signs of damage.
Blow the passages clear with compressed air. Re-
place a bolt as necessary.
CAM CHAIN AND
CAM CHAIN DRIVE ASSEMBLY
The camshaft for each cylinder is chain driven by
the cam chain drive assembly, which consists of a
spring-loaded gear and a sprocket. The cam chain
drive assembly sits between the cam sprocket and
the timing gear. The timing gear on the crankshaft
drives the gear on the cam chain drive assembly.
The cam chain runs from the sprocket on the cam
chain drive assembly and turns the cam sprocket on
the end of the camshaft.
NOTE
The front cylinder timing gear comes
out during primary drive gear re
moval (Chapter Six); the rear cylin
der timing gear comes out during
flywheel removal (Chapter Five). Re
fer to the appropriate chapter when
servicing a timing gear.
Removal (Rear Cylinder)
The Yamaha sheave holder (part No. YS-01880
or 90890-01701), or its equivalent, is required to
perform this procedure.
