the cylinder bore. Make sure the master piston as-
sembly is oriented as shown in Figure 45.
3. Press the piston into the bore and secure it in
place with a new snap ring (B, Figure 45). The snap
ring must be seated in the groove inside the cylinder
bore as shown in Figure 44.
4. Lubricate the boot with fresh brake fluid. Posi-
tion the boot so the end with the lip faces into the
master cylinder bore and carefully roll the boot over
the piston so the boot seals the master cylinder bore.
See Figure 47.
5. If removed, install the compression spring (A,
Figure 42) and the bushing (B) into place on the
brake lever.
6. Slide the brake lever into place on the master
cylinder body. Make sure the compression spring
(A, Figure 42) engages the boss on the master cyl-
inder body.
7. Lubricate the lever pivot bolt with lithium soap
grease, and secure the brake lever to the body with
the pivot bolt and nut (Figure 41).
8. Install the blow-back baffle (Figure 43) into the
master cylinder reservoir.
9. Install the diaphragm, diaphragm plate and
cover after the master cylinder has been installed
onto the handlebar.
Inspection
1. Clean all parts in fresh DOT 4 brake fluid. Place
the master cylinder components on a clean lint-free
cloth when performing the following inspection
procedures.
2. Inspect the cylinder bore (Figure 48) and piston
contact surfaces for scratches, wear or other signs
of damage. Replace the master cylinder body if nec-
essary.
3. Inspect the inside of the reservoir for scratches,
wear or other signs of damage. Replace the master
cylinder body if necessary.
4. Make sure the passage in the bottom of the brake
fluid reservoir (Figure 49) is clear.
NOTE
The spring (C, Figure 46), spring seat
(A), primary cup (D), secondary cup
(E), piston (B), and snap ring (B, Fig-
ure 45) and boot (C) are sold as the
master cylinder kit. If any part is worn
or damaged, replace the master cylin
der kit.
