(C, Figure 91). Connect the negative test
probe to the black terminal (D).
c. If the relay does not have continuity, replace
the oil lamp level.
3. Check the oil level indicator wiring as follows:
a. Remove the fuel tank (Chapter Eight) and
disconnect the meter assembly connector
(Figure 87) from its harness mate.
b. Set a voltmeter to the 20 DC volt scale.
c. Connect the voltmeter positive test lead to the
red/white terminal on the harness side of the
14-pin meter connector (C, Figure 89); con-
nect the negative test lead to the black/white
terminal (D).
d. Turn the main switch on. The meter should
indicate battery voltage. If the voltage is less
than battery voltage, the wiring between the
main switch and the meter connector is faulty.
Make the necessary repairs.

Oil Level Relay Removal/Installation

1. Remove the battery cover as described in Chap-
ter Fourteen.
2. Lift the oil level relay (A, Figure 90) from the
mounting tang on the battery box.
3. Disconnect the four-pin connector (B, Figure
90) from the relay and remove the relay.
4. Installation is the reverse of removal.
a. Pack the connector with dielectric grease.
b. Make sure the connectors are clean and tight.
SPEED SENSOR
Removal/Installation
1. Remove the toolbox panel as described in Chap-
ter Fourteen. Remove the side cover from the left
side as described in Chapter Fourteen.
2. Roll the boot back from the electrical connector,
and disconnect the three-pin speed sensor connec-
tor (A, Figure 92) from its harness mate.
3. Release any cable ties or holders that secure the
speed sensor wire to the frame. Note the location of
these ties and note how the speed sensor wire is
routed along the motorcycle.
4. Remove the speed sensor screw and lift the sen-
sor (Figure 93) from the middle drive housing.
5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the
following:
91
92
a. Torque the speed sensor screw to 7 N•m (62
in.-lb.).
b. Make sure all connections are clean and tight.
Test
Perform the following test whenever the self-di-
agnostic system flashes a speed sensor error (code
4).
1. Securely support the motorcycle on a level sur-
face with the rear wheel off the ground.
2. Check the wiring in the speed sensor circuit. All
connections and grounds must be clean and tight.
3. Remove the toolbox cover and left side cover as
described in Chapter Fourteen.
4. Roll the boot back from the electrical connector
and locate the three-pin speed sensor connector (A,
Figure 92).
5. Set a voltmeter to the 20 DC volt scale.
6. Backprobe the connector and connect the volt-
meter positive test lead to the white terminal (Fig-
ure 94) in the harness side of the connector.
Connect the negative test lead to a good ground.
