12. Follow the break-in procedure in Chapter Five
if the cylinder block was rebored or honed, or if a
new piston or piston rings were installed.
Inspection
The following procedure requires the use of
highly specialized and costly measuring instru-
ments. If such equipment is not readily available,
have the measurements performed by a dealership
or qualified machine shop.
1. Remove all gasket residue from the top and bot-
tom gasket surfaces (A, Figure 114) on the cylinder
block. Apply a gasket remover or use solvent and
soak any old gasket material stuck to the cylinder
block. If necessary, use a dull, broad-tipped chisel
and gently scrape off all gasket residue. Do not
gouge a sealing surface or an oil leak will result.
2. Wash the cylinder block in solvent to remove
any oil and carbon particles. The cylinder bore must
be cleaned thoroughly before any measurement oth-
erwise incorrect readings may be obtained.
3. Check the cylinder wall (B, Figure 114) for
scratches. If there are scratches, the cylinder should
be rebored.
5. Measure the cylinder bore with a cylinder bore
gauge (Figure 115) at a point 40 mm (1.57 in.) be-
low the top of the cylinder block. Measure the cylin-
der bore in two axes: in-line with the piston pin and
90° to the pin (Figure 116).
6. Calculate the average of these two cylinder bore
measurements. If this average is out of specification
(Table 2), replace the cylinder, piston and rings as a
set. Oversized pistons and rings are not available.
7. Calculate the piston-to-cylinder clearance as de-
scribed in Piston Clearance later in this chapter.
