c. The engine can start when the sidestand is up
and the transmission is in neutral.
d. If the sidestand is up, the engine will also start
if the transmission is in gear and the clutch le-
ver is pulled in.
2. Before starting the engine, shift the transmission
into neutral and make sure the engine stop switch
(A, Figure 2) is set to run.
3. Turn the ignition switch on. The neutral indica-
tor light should be on (when transmission is in neu-
tral).
4. The engine is now ready to start. Refer to the
starting procedure in this section that best describes
the air temperature and engine conditions.
5. If the engine idles at a fast speed for more than 5
minutes or if the throttle is repeatedly snapped on
and off at normal air temperatures, the exhaust
pipes may discolor.
6. Excessive choke use can cause an excessively
rich fuel mixture. This condition can wash oil off
the piston and cylinder walls causing piston and
cylinder scuffing.
CAUTION
Do not operate the starter motor for
more than five seconds at a time. Wait
approximately ten seconds between
starting attempts.

Engine is Cold

1. Shift the transmission into neutral.
2. Move the choke lever (Figure 3) to the fully on
position.
3. Turn the ignition switch on.
4. Make sure the engine stop switch (A, Figure 2)
is in the run position.
NOTE
When a cold engine is started with the
throttle open and the choke on, a lean
mixture will result and cause hard
starting.
5. Press the starter button (B, Figure 2) and start
the engine. Do not open the throttle when pressing
the starter button.
6. Once the engine is running, move the choke le-
ver to the warm up position to help warm the en-
gine. Continue warming the engine until the choke
can be turned to the fully off position and the engine
responds to the throttle cleanly.

Engine is Warm or Hot

1. Shift the transmission into neutral.
2. Turn the ignition switch on.
4. Make sure the choke lever (Figure 3) is in the
fully off position.
5. Make sure the engine stop switch is in the run
position.
6. Open the throttle slightly and press the starter
button (B, Figure 2).

Engine is Flooded

NOTE
If the engine refuses to start, check the
carburetor overflow hose attached to
the bottom of the float bowl. If fuel
runs out the end of the hose, the fuel
inlet valve is stuck open, allowing the
carburetor to overfill. Remove the
carburetor and correct the problem.
Refer to Chapter Eight.
