Ring Gear Shim Thickness Selection

Calculate the ring gear shim thickness using the
following formula:
Ring gear shim thickness = (C + D) – [(35.40 + or
- E/100) + F].
C = the number on the final gearcase (B, Figure 41).
D = the number on the bearing housing (C, Fig-
ure 41).
E = the number on the ring gear (Figure 43).
F = the bearing thickness constant 13.00.
For example: If the final gearcase number (B,
Figure 41) is 45.51, the bearing housing number
(C) is 3.35, and the ring gear number (Figure 43) is
-05, then the pinion gear shim thickness:
= (45.51 + 3.35) + [(35.40 - 05/100) + 13]
= (45.51) + (3.35) – [(35.40-0.05) + 13]
= (48.86) – (35.35 + 13)
= 48.86 – 48.35
= 0.51

Number
Since ring gear shims are only available in incre-
ments of tenths of a millimeter, round off the hun-
dredths digit according to the chart in Figure 42.
In the above example, round the 0.51 mm thick-
ness down to 0.50 mm. Refer to the chart in Figure
33 for available ring gear shims and select the ring
gear shim that is 0.50 mm thick.
