4. Refer to Table 2 and use the bearing number to
determine the color code for the bearing insert. In
the above example, brown bearing inserts would be
installed in the connecting rod.
NOTE
Determine the bearing insert number
for both connecting rods. Then take
insert numbers and colors to a
Yamaha
dealership
purchase.
5. Repeat Steps 1-4 for the other connecting rod.
6. After new bearings have been selected, recheck
the oil clearance as described in this section. If
clearance is still out of specification, take the crank-
shaft and connecting rods to a Yamaha dealership
for further service. Yamaha does not provide con-
necting rod or crankpin wear specifications.

gine should be broken in just as though it were new.
The performance and service life of the engine
greatly depend upon a careful and sensible
break-in.
During the break-in period (the initial 1000 miles
[1600 km]), stop the engine after every hour of op-
eration and let it cool for five to ten minute. Periodi-
cally vary the speed of the motorcycle. Avoid
prolonged steady running at one speed, no matter
how moderate. Also avoid prolonged full-throttle
operation, hard acceleration or any situation that
could result in excessive heat.
1. During the first 600 miles (1000 km) of opera-
tion, avoid running above 1/3 throttle.
2. Between 600 to 1000 miles (1000-1600 km) of
operation, avoid running above 1/2 throttle.
3. At the end of the break-in period (1000 miles
[1600 km]), replace the engine oil, oil filter and fi-
nal gear oil. This helps ensure that all of the parti-
cles produced during break-in are removed from the
engine.
