7. Remove and discard the valve guide and circlip.
Never reinstall a valve guide or circlip. They are no
longer true and are not within tolerance.
8. After the cylinder head cools, check the guide
bore for carbon or other contamination. Clean the
bore thoroughly.
9. Reheat the cylinder head as described in Step 4.
WARNING
Wear heavy gloves when performing
this procedure. The cylinder head will
be very hot.
10. Using heavy gloves or kitchen pot holders, re-
move the cylinder head from the oven and place it
on wooden blocks with the combustion chamber
facing down.
11. Remove one valve guide from the freezer.
CAUTION
Failure to lubricate the new valve
guide and guide bore will result in
damage to the cylinder head and/or
valve guide.
12. Apply clean engine oil to the new valve guide
and to the valve guide bore in the cylinder head.
13. From the top side of the cylinder head (cam-
shaft side), drive the new valve guide into the cylin-
der head with a hammer, the 8 mm (0.31 in.) valve
guide installer (A, Figure 95) and the valve guide
remover (B). Drive the valve guide into the bore un-
til the circlip is completely seated against the cylin-
der head.
14. After the cylinder head has cooled down, ream
the new valve guides as follows:
a. Apply cutting oil to both the new valve guide
and to the valve guide reamer.
CAUTION
Always rotate the valve guide reamer
clockwise. The valve guide will be
damaged if the reamer is rotated
counterclockwise.
b. Insert the 8 mm (0.31 in.) valve guide reamer
from the top side (Figure 96) and rotate the
reamer clockwise. Continue to rotate the
reamer and work it down through the entire
length of the new valve guide. Continue to
apply additional cutting oil during this
procedure.

c. Rotate the reamer clockwise until it has trav-
eled all the way through the new valve guide.
d. Rotate the reamer clockwise and completely
withdraw the reamer from the valve guide.
e. Measure the inside diameter of the valve
guide with a small bore gauge (Figure 88).
Measure the gauge with a micrometer, and
compare the measurement to the specification
in Table 2. Replace the valve guide if it is not
within specification.
15. If necessary, repeat Steps 1-14 for any other
valve guide.
16. Thoroughly clean the cylinder head and valve
guides with solvent to wash out all metal particles.
Dry the head with compressed air.
17. Lightly oil the valve guides to prevent rust.
