10. Install the battery into the motorcycle as de-
scribed in this chapter.

New Battery Initialization

Always replace a maintenance free battery with
another maintenance free battery. Also make sure
the battery is charged completely before installing
it. Failure to do so will reduce the life of the battery.
Check with the dealership on the type of pre-service
that the battery received.
NOTE
Recycle the old battery. Most motor
cycle dealerships will accept an old
battery in trade with the purchase of a
new one. Never place an old battery in
the household trash. It is illegal in
most states to place any acid or lead
(heavy metal) contents in landfills.
TIRES

Tire Pressure

Check and adjust tire pressure to accommodate
the rider and cargo weight. A simple, accurate
tire-pressure gauge can be purchased for a few dol-
lars and should be carried in your motorcycle tool
kit. The tire pressure specifications are shown in
Table 2.

Tire Inspection

The likelihood of tire failure increases with tread
wear. It is estimated that the majority of all tire fail-
ures occur during the last 10% of usable tread wear.
Check tire tread for excessive wear, deep cuts, and
embedded objects, such as stones, nails, etc. Also
check for high spots that indicate internal tire dam-
age. Replace tires that show high spots or swelling.
If there is a nail in a tire, mark its location with a
light crayon before pulling it out. This will help lo-
cate the hole for repair. Refer to Chapter Ten for tire
changing procedures.
Measure tread wear (Figure 48) at the center of
the tire tread with a tread depth gauge or small ruler.
Because tires sometimes wear unevenly, measure
wear at several points. Replace the original equip-
ment tires if any tread depth measurement is less
than the value specified in Table 2.

Rim Inspection and Runout

Frequently inspect the wheel rims for cracks, warp-
ing or dents. A damaged rim may cause an air leak.
Wheel rim runout is the amount of wobble a
wheel shows as it rotates. To quickly check runout,
simply support the bike with the wheel off the
ground. Slowly turn the wheel while holding a
pointer solidly against a fork leg or the swing arm
with the other end against the rim. If either axial
