shaft outside diameter from the bushing inside
diameter. If the clearance is outside the range speci-
fied in Table 2, compare the camshaft journal out-
side diameter and bushing inside diameter
measurements to the specifications. Replace the
camshaft and/or bushing, whichever is out of
specification.
ROCKER ARMS
The following Yamaha special tools, or their
equivalents, are required to remove the rocker arms:
1. Slide hammer bolt (8 mm): YU-1083-2 or
90890-01085.
2. Slide
hammer
weight:
90890-0184.
Removal
Although the rocker arms and shafts (Figure 35)
are interchangeable when they are new, they be-
come mated through wear. Mark these parts (intake
or exhaust) during removal, so they can be rein-
stalled in their original locations.
1. Remove the cylinder head as described earlier in
this chapter, and remove the valve covers.
2. Remove the camshaft as described earlier in this
chapter.
NOTE
Two types of rocker arm bolts are used
on each cylinder head. The bolt with
the single oil hole (A, Figure 45) goes
on the exhaust side; the bolt with the
two oil holes (B) goes on the intake
side. This bolt also secures the oil line
to the head.
3. If the rocker arm bolt is still installed, remove it
from the exhaust side of the cylinder head.
4A. If a slide hammer is available, perform the fol-
lowing:
a. Assemble the slide hammer per the manufac-
turer's instructions.
b. Thread the slide hammer bolt (A, Figure 46)
into the rocker arm shaft. Repeatedly slide the
hammer weight (B, Figure 46) against the
bolt head and remove the rocker arm shaft.
4B. If a slide hammer is not available, perform the
following:
YU-1083-3
or
5. Remove the rocker arm (Figure 48) through the
camshaft port in the cylinder head. Label the rocker
arm and its shaft (intake or exhaust) so they can be
reinstalled in the same location in the head.
6. Repeat Steps 3-5 for the other rocker arm.

a. Thread an 8 × 125 mm bolt (Figure 47) into
the rocker arm.
b. Grasp the bolt head with a pair of locking pli-
ers.
c. Tap the pliers with a hammer and pull the
rocker shaft from the cylinder head.
