ment in this chapter. Install each swing arm
bearing so it sits flush with the outside edge of
the bearing bore.
6. Repeat Step 5 and inspect the swing arm bearing
(B, Figure 16) in each side of the frame pivot.
7. Inspect the thrust cover (B, Figure 17) and
washer (A) from each side of the frame pivot.
FINAL DRIVE ASSEMBLY
Removal/Installation
1. Securely support the motorcycle on a level sur-
face.
2. If the final gearcase will be serviced, drain the
gearcase oil as described in Chapter Three.
3. Remove the rear wheel (Chapter Ten) and set it
on wooden blocks.
4. Grasp the drive shaft/final gearcase assembly
and lift the final gearcase (A, Figure 22) from the
rear wheel hub. Watch for the distance collar (Fig-
ure 23).
5. Installation is the reverse of removal.
a. Make sure the distance collar (A, Figure 24)
is seated within the ring gear.
b. Apply molybdenum disulfide grease to the
splines of the ring gear (B, Figure 24) and to
the splines on the rear wheel hub (Figure 25).
c. Make sure the ring gear splines mesh with
those on the rear wheel.
Inspection
1. Inspect the gearcase for any external damage.
2. Make sure the oil filler bolt (B, Figure 22) and
drain bolt (C) are in good condition.
3. Inspect the internal splines in the ring gear (B,
Figure 24). If there is excessive wear or damage,
replace the gear coupling.
4. Check the oil seal (C, Figure 24) for leaks or
signs of damage. If necessary, replace the oil seal as
follows:
a. Pry the oil seal (Figure 26) from the ring gear
bearing housing.
b. Lubricate the new oil seal with lithium soap
grease, and set it in place.
c. Use a driver of a socket that matches the di-
ameter of the oil seal (Figure 27) to drive the
seal until it is seated in the housing.
