Engine Top End; Servicing Engine In The Frame; Cylinder Head Covers - Yamaha V star 1100 Owner's Manual

This chapter provides complete service and over-
haul procedures for the engine top end components.
This includes the camshafts, valves, cylinder heads,
pistons, piston rings and the cylinder blocks. Refer
to Chapter Three for valve adjustment procedures.
Refer to Basic Service Methods in Chapter One.
When inspecting components, compare any mea-
surements to the specifications in Table 2 at the end
of this chapter. Replace any part that is damaged,
worn or out of specification. During assembly,
torque fasteners to the specified torque.
The V-Star 1100 engine is an air-cooled,
four-stroke, single overhead camshaft (SOHC)
V-twin.
Two main bearings support the crankshaft in a
vertically split crankcase. The camshaft in each cyl-
inder is chain-driven by a cam chain drive assembly
that meshes with the timing gear on the crankshaft.
Cam chain tension is maintained by an automatic,
spring-loaded tensioner that bears against the rear
run of the cam chain.
CHAPTER FOUR

ENGINE TOP END

The engine and transmission share a common
case and the same wet-sump oil supply. The
wet-plate clutch is located on the right side of the
engine.

SERVICING ENGINE IN THE FRAME

The following components can be serviced while
the engine is in the frame:
1. External shift mechanism.
2. Clutch.
3. Carburetors.
4. Starter.
5. Alternator and electrical system.
6. Oil pump.

CYLINDER HEAD COVERS

Two chrome covers crown the head on each cyl-
inder: a large and a small cover. Mark each cover
