g. Remove the index pin (A, Figure 10), upper
fork cover spacer (B) and washer (C).
h. Loosen the two clamp bolts (A, Figure 5) on
the lower fork bridge. Rotate the fork tube (B,
Figure 5), and lower it from the lower fork
bridge and the lower fork cover. Take the fork
tube to the bench for further disassembly.
i. If necessary, remove the mounting bolts (A,
Figure 11) and remove the lower fork cover
(B) from the lower fork bridge.
15. Remove the damper rod (A, Figure 19) from
the fork tube.
NOTE
Do not remove the fork tube bushing
(F, Figure 20) unless it is going to be
replaced. Inspect it as described in
this chapter.
16. Slide the dust seal (A, Figure 20), retaining
clip (B), oil seal (C), washer (D) and the slider bush-
ing (E) from the fork tube.
17. Inspect all parts as described in this section.
Installation
XVS1100 models
1. If the fork leg was disassembled, assemble it as
described in this section.
2. Slide the fork tube up through the lower fork
bridge, through the turn signal bracket, and into the
upper fork bridge.
3. Align the top of the fork tube with the top edge
of the upper fork bridge as shown in Figure 3.
4. Torque the fasteners in the following order:
NOTE
A single clamp bolt is used on each
side of the lower fork bridge on
XVS1100 models.
a. Torque the lower fork bridge clamp bolt (A,
Figure 5) to 30 N•m (22 ft-lb.).
b. Torque the front turn signal clamp bolt to 7
N•m (62 in.-lb.).
NOTE
Use a 6 point, 22 mm socket on the
cap bolt. A 12 point socket will mar
the cap bolt.

c. If the fork leg was disassembled, torque the
cap bolt (C, Figure 4) to 23 N•m (17 ft.-lb.).
d. Torque the upper fork bridge clamp bolt (A,
Figure 4) to 20 N•m (15 ft.-lb.).
5. Install the front fender as described in Chapter
Fourteen.
6. Install the front wheel as described in Chapter
Ten.
XVS1100A models
1. If the fork leg was disassembled, assemble it as
described in this chapter.
2. Install the lower fork cover (B, Figure 11) if it
was removed. Secure the cover to the lower fork
bridge with the mounting bolts (A, Figure 11).
CAUTION
The edges of the fork covers are
sharp. Wear gloves and exercise cau
tion. Hold the slider below the brake
caliper mounting boss during instal
lation so your hand will be protected
if the fork leg slides abruptly.
