l. Torque the clamp bolts (A, Figure 39) to 10
N•m (89 in.-lb.). Tighten the upper clamp bolt
first, then the lower bolt. There should be a
gap at the lower part of the clamp after tight-
ening.
Inspection
Check the handlebar along the entire mounting
area for cracks or damage. Replace a bent or dam-
aged handlebar immediately. If the bike is involved
in a crash, examine the handlebar, steering stem and
front fork legs carefully.
STEERING HEAD
Removal
The Yamaha ring nut wrench (part No.
YU-33975 or 90890-01403) or an equivalent tool is
needed to disassemble and reassemble the steering
head.
Refer to Figure 45 for this procedure.
1. Securely support the motorcycle on a level sur-
face.
2. Remove the front wheel as described in Chapter
Ten.
3. Remove the headlight housing as described in
Chapter Nine.
4. Remove the each fork leg as described in this
chapter.
5A. On XVS1100 models, perform the following:
a. Cover the frame and fuel tank with a heavy
cloth or plastic tarp to protect them from acci-
dental brake fluid spills.
b. Remove the steering head nut (C, Figure 41)
and washer.
c. Lift the upper fork bridge from the steering
stem, with the handlebar attached, and lay the
fork bridge/handlebar assembly across the
tank.
d. Remove the mounting nut and bolt, and re-
move each flasher assembly from the lower
fork bridge.
5B. On XVZ1100A models, remove the flasher as-
sembly as follows:
a. Pull the cover (A, Figure 46) from the flasher
bracket.
b. Disconnect the flasher bullet connectors (B,
Figure 46) from their harness mates.
c. Remove the mounting bolts (C, Figure 46).
Pull the flasher wires through the hole in the
headlight housing, and remove the flasher
bracket from the lower fork bridge.
6. Remove the mounting bolts (A, Figure 47) and
remove the brake hose union (B) from the lower
fork bridge. Use a bunjee cord or wire to suspend
the union from the motorcycle.
7. If necessary, remove the headlight housing
bracket(s) from the lower fork bridge.
8. Remove the lockwasher (A, Figure 48) from the
top of the ring nuts.
9. Remove the locking ring nut (B, Figure 48),
then the rubber washer (Figure 49).
