tion. The cam chain drive assembly
cannot be properly timed unless the
flywheel is removed. Remove the fly
wheel now in order to study the align
ment of the timing marks.
3. Set the rear cylinder to top dead center on the
compression stroke and remove the flywheel as de-
scribed in Chapter Five. Note that the crankshaft
keyway (A, Figure 54), the timing mark on the cam
chain drive assembly (B), and the center of the shaft
boss (C) for the cam chain drive assembly are
aligned. These marks must be aligned during
assembly.
4. Remove the retainer bolt (A, Figure 55) and
slide the retainer (B) from the slots on the cam chain
drive assembly shaft.
CAUTION
An oil slot (Figure 56) in the end of
the drive assembly shaft collects oil
that lubricates the shaft and bushing
in the cam chain drive assembly. The
shaft is installed so this oil slot faces
up.
4. Remove the drive assembly shaft (Figure 57).
Note that the oil slot in the shaft faces up. It must be
reinstalled in this direction during assembly.
5. Lift the cam chain and cam chain drive assembly
(Figure 54) from the cam chain tunnel.
Installation (Rear Cylinder)
1. Make sure the rear cylinder is still set to top dead
center on the compression stroke.
a. If necessary, install the Woodruff key into the
crankshaft keyway and slide the flywheel
onto the crankshaft. Temporarily install the
alternator cover onto the crankcase. Make
sure the T-mark (A, Figure 9) on the flywheel
still aligns with the pointer (B) on the alterna-
tor cover. Remove the cover and flywheel.
b. If the engine has been completely disassem-
bled, set the rear cylinder to top dead center
by pulling the rear connecting rod to the top
of its stroke.
NOTE
The cam chain drive assemblies are
not interchangeable. The rear cylin
der cam chain drive assembly is iden
tified by a 2 stamped on the gear face;
a 3 identifies the front cylinder cam
chain drive assembly. Make sure each
cam chain drive assembly is installed
in the correct cylinder.
2. Preload the cam chain drive assembly as
follows:
a. Cut a 6 × 15 mm pin from the shoulder
(non-threaded portion) of a 6 mm bolt.
