26. Install the fork cap while pushing down on the
spring. Start the bolt slowly; do not cross-thread it.
Tighten the fork cap as tightly as possible. The cap
bolt will be torqued to specification once the fork is
installed on the motorcycle.
27. Install the fork leg as described earlier in this
chapter.
Inspection
1. Thoroughly clean all parts in solvent and dry
them with compressed air.
2. Blow out the oil holes in the damper rod with
compressed air. Clean them if necessary.
3. Check the damper rod assembly for:
a. Bent, cracked or otherwise damaged damper
rod (A, Figure 33).
b. Excessively worn rebound spring (B, Figure
33).
c. Damaged oil lock piece (C, Figure 33).
d. Excessively worn or damaged piston or pis-
ton ring (D, Figure 33).
4. Replace any worn part.
5. Check the fork tube for straightness and for
signs of wear or scratches. If it is bent or severely
scratched, replace it.
6. Check the fork tube for chrome flaking or creas-
ing. This condition will damage the oil seal. Re-
place the fork tube if necessary.
7. Check the seal area of the slider (Figure 34) for
dents, scratches or other damage that would allow
oil leaks. Replace the slider if necessary.
8. Check the slider for dents or exterior damage
that may cause the upper fork tube to hang up dur-
ing riding. Replace it if necessary. Check for cracks
or damage to the brake caliper (A, Figure 35) and
fender mounting bosses (B).
9. Inspect the front axle threads in the slider for
damage. If damage is slight, chase the threads with
a metric tap. If damage is excessive, replace the
slider.
10. Measure the uncompressed length of the fork
spring (Figure 36). If the spring has sagged to the
service limit (Table 1), replace it.
11. Inspect the fork tube bushing (F, Figure 20). If
it is scratched or scored, replace it. If the Teflon
coating is worn off so the copper base material is
showing on approximately 3/4 of the total surface
(Figure 37), replace the bushing.
