4. Clean the race seats in the steering head. Check
for cracks or other damage.
5. Apply grease to a new upper race and insert the
race into the steering head with the open side facing
out. Square the race with the race bore. Tap it slowly
and squarely with a block of wood (Figure 57).

LOWER BEARING REPLACEMENT

Do not remove the lower bearing and lower dust
seal unless they are going to be replaced. The bear-
ing can be difficult to remove. If it cannot be easily
removed as described in this procedure, have a deal-
ership service department replace the bearing and
seal.
Never reinstall a bearing that has been removed.
It is no longer true and will damage the rest of the
bearing assembly if reused.
1. Install the adjusting and locking ring nuts as well
as the steering head nut onto the top of the steering
stem to protect the threads.
2. Use a chisel to drive the bearing/seal assembly
from the steering stem (Figure 58). Work around in
a circle and slowly drive the assembly from the
shoulder on the steering stem. Remove the bearing
and seal. Discard them both.
3. Clean the steering stem with solvent and dry it
thoroughly.

4. Slide a new dust seal and the lower bearing onto
the steering stem.
5. Align the bearing inner race with the machined
shoulder on the steering stem.
6. Drive the bearing onto the steering stem shoul-
der with a piece of pipe that matches the diameter of
the inner race (Figure 59).
