wear. If the pads are wearing unevenly, the
caliper may not be operating correctly.
c. Measure the thickness of the friction material
with a vernier caliper. Replace both brake
pads if the thickness on either pad equals or is
less than the service limit listed in Table 1 or
Table 2. When servicing the front brakes, re-
place both pads in both front calipers if any
pad is worn to the service limit (Figure 22).
d. Inspect the metal plate on the back of each
pad for corrosion and damage.
NOTE
Cleaning the brake disc is especially
important if new pads are being in
stalled. Many brake pad compounds
are not compatible.
2. Use brake parts cleaner and a fine grade emery
cloth to remove all road debris and brake pad resi-
due from the brake disc surface.
3. Inspect the brake disc as described in this chap-
ter.
4. Check the friction surface of the new pads for
any foreign matter or manufacturing residue. If nec-
essary, clean the pads with an aerosol brake cleaner.
5. Check the pad springs (Figure 23 and Figure 11
for the front, and Figure 16 for the rear) for wear or
fatigue. Replace a pad spring if it shows any sign of
damage or excessive wear.
6. Install new pad spring(s) when installing new
brake pads.
FRONT CALIPER
Refer to Figure 24.
