8. Check the pins (B, Figure 12) and shift cam
ramps (C) for wear.
a. If necessary, remove the shift drum screw (D,
Figure 12) to replace the shift cam, pins or
bearing.
b. During assembly, torque the shift drum screw
to 4 N•m (35 in.-lb.).
TRANSMISSION
Removal/Installation
Remove and install the transmission shaft assem-
blies as described in Crankcase Disassembly and
Crankcase Assembly in Chapter Five.
Service Notes
1. A large egg flat (the type that restaurants get
their eggs in) can be used to help maintain correct
alignment and positioning of the parts. As each part
is removed, set it into one of the depressions in the
egg flat with the same orientation it had when on the
transmission shaft. See Figure 13. This is an easy
way to retain the correct relationship of all parts.
2. The snap rings fit tightly on the transmission
shafts. They usually become distorted during re-
moval. All snap rings must be replaced during as-
sembly.
3. Snap rings will turn and fold over, making re-
moval and installation difficult. To ease replace-
ment, open a snap ring with a pair of snap ring pliers
while at the same time holding the back of the ring
with pliers (Figure 14).
4. Install a snap ring so its flat side faces away from
the direction of thrust. See Figure 15.

5. Position each snap ring so its end gap sits above
a groove in the transmission shaft as shown in Fig-
ure 16.
6. Apply molybdenum disulfide oil to the each gear
during assembly.
7. The gears on a particular shaft can be identified
by their diameter. On the mainshaft, first gear has
