7. Remove the rear axle clamp bolts (B, Figure 23)
and pull the rear axle clamp from the swing arm.
Notice the dot (Figure 24) on the clamp. The clamp
must be reinstalled with the dot facing up.
8. Remove the final gearcase bolts (A, Figure 25)
and their washers.
9. Remove the axle nut (B, Figure 25) and washer
(C) from the left side.
10. Pull the axle (A, Figure 26) from the right side,
and remove the spacer (B) that sits between the
swing arm and the caliper bracket.
11. Remove the rear caliper bracket (C, Figure 26)
from the motorcycle.
12. Roll the wheel rearward until the driveshaft
clears the universal joint (A, Figure 27) and remove
the wheel assembly. Watch for the stepped collar in
the right side of the hub.
13. If necessary, lift the final drive unit (Figure 28)
from the hub. Watch for the distance collar (Figure
29). Reinstall it in the final drive unit (A, Figure 30)
so it will not be misplaced.
14. Inspect the rear wheel as described in Wheel In
spection in this chapter.
15. If necessary, disassemble the hub as described
later in this chapter.
Installation
1. If removed, install the final drive gearcase (Fig-
ure 28) onto the rear hub. Make sure the distance
collar (A, Figure 30) is in place in the ring gear. Ap-
ply molybdenum disulfide grease to the splines in
the ring gear (B, Figure 30) and the splines in the
rear hub.
2. Apply a coat of lithium soap grease to the rear
axle, bearings, seals and stepped collar.
