8. Use a wrench to open the bleed valve. The vac-
uum pump should pull fluid from the system. Close
the bleed valve before the brake fluid stops flowing
from the system or before the master cylinder reser-
voir runs empty. Add fluid to the reservoir as neces-
sary.
9. Operate the brake lever or brake pedal a few
times, and release it.
10. Repeat Steps 7 and 9 until the fluid leaving the
bleed valve is clear and free of air bubbles. If the
system is difficult to bleed, tap the master cylinder
and caliper housing with a soft mallet to release
trapped air bubbles.
11. Test the feel of the brake lever or brake pedal. It
should feel firm and offer the same resistance each
time it is operated. If the lever or pedal feels soft, air
is still trapped in the system. Continue bleeding the
system.
12. When bleeding is complete, disconnect the
hose from the bleed valve and torque the valve to 6
N•m (53 in.-lb.).
13. When bleeding the front brakes, repeat Step
1-12 on the opposite front caliper.
14. Add brake fluid to the master cylinder to cor-
rect the fluid level.
15. Install the diaphragm, diaphragm plate and top
cap. Make sure the cap is secured in place.
NOTE
Do not ride the motorcycle until both
brakes and the brake light are work
ing properly.
16. Test ride the motorcycle slowly at first to make
sure the brakes are operating properly.

BRAKE FLUID DRAINING

Before disconnecting a front or rear brake hose,
drain the brake fluid as described below. Draining
the fluid reduces the amount of fluid that can spill
out when system components are removed.
This section describes two methods for draining
the brake system: manual and vacuum.
Manual Draining
An empty bottle, a length of clear hose and a
wrench is required for this procedure.
1. Remove the dust cap from the bleed valve. Re-
move all dirt from the valve and its outlet port.

2. Connect a length of clear hose to the bleed valve
on the caliper. Insert the other end into a container
(Figure 2, typical).
3. Apply the front brake lever or the rear brake
pedal until it stops. Hold the lever or pedal in this
position.
4. Open the bleed valve with a wrench and let the
lever or pedal move to the limit of its travel. Close
the bleed valve.
5. Release the lever or pedal, and repeat Steps 3
and 4 until brake fluid stops flowing from the bleed
valve.
6. When draining the front brakes, repeat this on
the other brake caliper.
7. Discard the brake fluid.
