The brake system on all models consists of dual
front disc brakes and a single disc brake in the rear.
This chapter describes the service procedures for
brake system components.
When inspecting brake components, compare any
measurements to the brake system specifications at
the end of this chapter. Replace any part that is dam-
aged, worn or out of specification. During assembly,
tighten brake fasteners to the specified torque.

BRAKE SERVICE

When working on hydraulic brakes, all tools and
the work area must be absolutely clean. Caliper or
master cylinder components can be damaged by
tiny particles of grit that enter the brake system. Do
not use sharp tools inside the master cylinders, cali-
pers or on the pistons. Sharp tools could damage
these components and interfere with brake opera-
tion.
If there is any doubt about your ability to service a
brake component safely and correctly, take the job
to a Yamaha dealership or brake specialist.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN

BRAKES

Consider the following when servicing the front
and rear brake systems.
1. Disc brake components rarely require disassem-
bly. Do not disassemble them unless necessary.
2. When adding brake fluid, only use brake fluid
clearly marked DOT 4 from a sealed container.
Other grades of brake fluid may vaporize and cause
brake failure.
3. Always use the same brand of brake fluid. One
manufacturer's brake fluid may not be compatible
with another's. Do not mix different brands of brake
fluids.
4. Brake fluid absorbs moisture, which greatly re-
duces its ability to perform correctly. Purchase
brake fluid in small containers and properly discard
any small leftover quantities. Do not store a con-
tainer of brake fluid with less than 1/4 of the fluid
remaining. This small amount absorbs moisture
very rapidly.
