5. Remove the sidestand, toolbox cover and right
side cover (Chapter Fourteen).
6. Roll the boot on the toolbox panel from the elec-
trical connectors. Disconnect the three-pin stator
connector (A, Figure 21) and the two-pin pickup
coil connector (B) from their respective mates on
the wiring harness.
7. Release any cable ties that secure the stator and
pickup coil wires to the frame. Note how the wires
are routed along the frame. Reroute these wires
along the same path during installation.
8. Before removing the alternator bolts, note how
the clutch cable/AIS bracket is secured behind two
bolts (Figure 22). The bracket must be installed be-
hind these bolts during installation.
9. Evenly loosen the alternator cover bolts (Figure
23). Remove the bolts and pull the alternator cover
from the crankcase. Watch for the starter idler gear
assembly (A, Figure 24). It may come out with the
cover. If it does, reinstall the assembly into the
crankcase so the idler assembly engages the starter
wheel gear and the starter drive gear.
10. Remove the alternator cover gasket (B, Figure
24) and the two dowels (C) from the crankcase.
11. Inspect the shift shaft oil seal for damage or signs
of leaking. If necessary, replace the seal as follows:
a. Pry the oil seal from the alternator cover (Fig-
ure 25).
b. Lubricate a new seal with lithium soap
grease.
c. Set the new seal in place so the manufac-
turer's marks face up.
d. Drive the oil seal into the cover with a driver
or socket that matches the outside diameter of
the seal.
12. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the
