2. 8 mm (0.31 in.) valve guide installer (YM-01200
or 90890-01200).
3. 8 mm (0.31 in.) valve guide reamer (YM-01201
or 90890-04013).
Procedure
NOTE
The valve guide contracts when it is
cooled, which reduces the overall di
ameter of the guide. On the other
hand, heating the cylinder head
slightly increases the diameter of the
guide bore due to expansion. Since
93
the valve guides have a slight
interference fit, cooling the guides
and heating the head makes installa
tion easier.
1. Install new circlips onto the new valve guides,
and place the valve guides in a freezer overnight.
2. Remove the intake manifold and O-ring from the
cylinder head. Discard the O-ring.
3. If servicing the rear cylinder head, remove the
exhaust manifold and exhaust gasket. Discard the
gasket.
CAUTION
Do not heat the cylinder head with a
torch. Never bring a flame into con
tact with the cylinder head. Direct
flame can warp the cylinder head.
4. Place the cylinder head in a shop oven and warm
it to 100° C (212° F). Check the temperature of the
cylinder head by flicking tiny drops of water onto
the head. The cylinder head is heated to the proper
temperature if the drops sizzle and evaporate imme-
diately.
WARNING
Wear heavy gloves when performing
this procedure. The cylinder head will
be very hot.
5. Using heavy gloves or kitchen pot holders, re-
move the cylinder head from the oven and place it
on wooden blocks with the combustion chamber
facing up.
6. From the combustion side of the head, drive the
old valve guide (A, Figure 94) out of the cylinder
head with the 8 mm valve guide remover (B) and a
hammer.
