3. Install the bearing retainer with a new O-ring
and new oil seal. Use lithium soap grease to pack
the lips of the oil seal and to lubricate the O-ring.
4. Use the Yamaha bearing retainer wrench to
torque the bearing retainer to 115 N•m (85 ft.-lb.).
Turn the bearing retainer counterclockwise to
tighten it.
5. Install the gear coupling and the washer.
6. Apply a medium-strength threadlocking com-
pound to the new pinion gear nut and install it.
7. Hold the gear coupling with the Yamaha gear
coupling/shaft holder (Figure 34) and torque the
pinion gear nut 130 N•m (96 ft.-lb.).
NOTE
At this point in the procedure, the ring
gear assembly must be installed with-
out the thrust washer.
8. If the thrust washer is still in place, remove it
from the ring gear. Install the ring gear assembly
into final gearcase.
9. Install the bearing housing. Evenly tighten the
bearing housing nuts (A, Figure 32) and bolts (B)
in a criss-cross pattern. Torque the nuts to 23 N•m
(17 ft.-lb.). Torque the bolts to 40 N•m (30 ft.-lb.).
10. Measure and adjust the gear lash as described
in this chapter.
11. Measure the ring gear thrust clearance as
follows:
a. Remove the bearing housing and the ring gear
as an assembly.
b. Place four pieces of Plastigage around the in-
ner circumference of the ring gear (Figure
37) and install the original thrust washer.
Make sure the Plastigage is between the ring
gear and the thrust washer.
CAUTION
Do not turn the pinion gear or the ring
gear with Plastigage in the gearcase.
This will produce an invalid measure
ment.
c. Lower the final gearcase onto the ring
gear/bearing housing assembly, and install
the bearing housing nuts (A, Figure 32) and
bolts (B). Evenly tighten the bearing housing
nuts and bolts in a criss-cross pattern. Torque
the nuts to 23 N•m (17 ft.-lb.). Torque the
bolts to 40 N•m (30 ft.-lb.).
d. Remove the bearing housing and the ring gear
as an assembly, and measure the width of the
Plastigage (Figure 37).
e. If the thrust clearance is within the range
specified in Table 1, remove the Plastigage.
Reassemble the bearing housing and ring
gear assembly with the original thrust washer.
Tighten the bearing housing hardware as de-
scribed in Step 9.
