a. Install the shock absorber with the preload
adjuster indicator facing the direction noted
during removal.
b. Install the shock absorber upper bolt (A, Fig-
ure 3) from the right side. Make sure the bolt
engages the receiver (B, Figure 3) on the
frame. Install the upper nut from the left side.
c. Install the shock absorber lower bolt (A, Fig-
ure 2) from the left side; install the lower nut
and washer from the right.
d. Torque the shock absorber upper nut to 40
N•m (30 ft.-lb.).
e. Torque the shock absorber lower nut to 48
N•m (35 ft.-lb.).
Inspection
1. Clean and dry the hardware and the mounts on
the shock absorber.
2. Inspect the shock absorber (Figure 4) for dents,
damage or oil leaks.
3. Inspect the upper mount bushing (Figure 5) and
inspect the lower mount. Look for elongation,
cracks or other damage.
4. Inspect the spring for cracks or other signs of fa-
tigue.
5. Inspect the shock absorber for signs of a gas or
oil leak.
6. If any part of the shock absorber is worn or dam-
aged, replace the shock absorber. Replacement
parts are unavailable.
7. Replace the mounting hardware as necessary.

Shock Absorber Disposal

The gas must be released before a shock absorber
is discarded in the trash. Drill a 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12
in.) hole through the shock absorber at a point 15-20
mm (0.59-0.79 in.) from the upper end of the cylin-
der (the end with the preload adjuster).
SUSPENSION LINKAGE
Removal/Installation
The rear suspension linkage consists of a relay
arm and two connecting arms. Refer to Figure 1
when servicing the suspension linkage.
1. Remove the shock absorber as described in this
chapter.
