4. On XVS1100A models, remove the fuel tank
(Chapter Eight).
5. Note that the top of the fork tube aligns with the
top of the upper fork bridge (Figure 3). The fork leg
must be reinstalled in this same position.
6. Remove any cable ties or holders that secure a
brake, clutch or electrical line to a fork leg. Note the
location of these cable ties. They must be reinstalled
during installation.
7. Remove the Allen bolt as follows:
a. Place a drain pan beneath the fork leg.
b. Insert the axle through both fork legs. The
axle holds the sliders in position while the
Allen bolt is loosened.
c. Use an impact wrench to loosen and remove
the Allen bolt from the bottom of the fork leg.
If the Allen bolt cannot be loosened, use the
damper rod holder mentioned in Step 10.
8. Pull out the fork slider and fully extend the fork
leg.
CAUTION
The cap bolt (C, Figure 4) is under
spring pressure. Exercise caution
when removing the cap bolt.
NOTE
Use a 6 point, 22 mm socket on the
cap bolt. A 12 point socket will mar
the bolt.
9. Use a 6-point, 22 mm socket to break loose the
cap bolt and slowly loosen the cap bolt (C, Figure
4). Remove the cap bolt, spring seat, collar and the
fork spring. Note that the closer wound coils on the
spring face up.
10. If the Allen bolt could not be loosened during
Step 7, remove it now as follows:
a. Place a drain pan beneath the fork leg.
b. Install the damper rod holder onto the T-han-
dle.
c. Insert the holder into the fork tube until the
holder engages the damper rod (Figure 13).
Hold the damper rod and remove the Allen
bolt (Figure 14) along with its copper washer
from the bottom of the slider.
d. Let the oil drain from the fork. If necessary,
pump the slider to expel any residual oil.
11. Remove the dust seal (A, Figure 15) and the re-
taining clip (B) from the fork slider.

NOTE
It may be necessary to slightly heat
the area on the slider around the oil
seal prior to removal. Heat the area
with a rag soaked in hot water. Do not
apply a flame directly to the fork
slider.
12. There is an interference fit between the bushing
in the fork slider and the bushing on the fork tube.
In order to remove the fork slider from the fork
tube, firmly grasp the slider (Figure 16). Pull hard
