TRANSMISSION, SHIFT MECHANISM
This chapter describes service procedures for the
transmission, internal shift mechanism, external
shift mechanism, middle drive shaft assembly and
the middle driven shaft assembly.
When inspecting these components, compare any
measurement to the specifications listed in Table 1
at the end of the chapter. Replace any components
that are worn, damaged or out of specification. Dur-
ing assembly, tighten fasteners to the specified
torque.
SHIFT PEDAL/FOOTREST ASSEMBLY
Removal/Installation
Refer to Figure 1.
1. Note that the index mark (A, Figure 2) on the
shift shaft aligns with the slot in the shift lever. If the
mark is worn or missing, make a new one so the
shift lever can be properly installed on the shift
shaft during assembly.

AND MIDDLE GEAR
2. Loosen the shift lever clamp bolt (B, Figure 2).
3. Remove the footrest bracket bolts (Figure 3).
4. Slide the shift lever (C, Figure 2) from the shift
shaft and remove the shift pedal/footrest. Watch for
the washer behind the shift lever.
5. If necessary, remove the shift pedal from the
footrest bracket as follows:
a. Remove the snap ring from the pivot boss on
the footpeg bracket.
b. Remove the washer and slide the shift pedal
from the pivot boss.
c. On XVS1100A models, watch for the wave
washer on the outboard side of the shift pedal.
6. Installation is the reverse of assembly. Note the
following:
a. Lubricate the pivot boss on the footrest
bracket with lithium soap grease.
b. Make sure the snap is properly seated in the
groove on the footpeg bracket pivot boss.
