14. Check the sliding surfaces (B, Figure 20) of
the front cam chain guide and the rear chain guide
(the bolted guide) for wear or damage. Replace the
chain guide(s) as necessary.
15. If the exhaust manifold was removed, install it
onto the rear cylinder. Install a new exhaust gasket
into the exhaust port and torque the manifold nuts to
20 N•m (15 ft-lb.).
CAMSHAFT
Removal
Refer to Figure 35.
1. Remove the cylinder head as described in this
chapter.
2. Unthread the camshaft bushing retainer bolt (A,
Figure 36) and remove the retainer (B).
3. Turn a 10-mm bolt into the camshaft, and pull
the camshaft and bushing (A, Figure 37) from the
cylinder head. Watch for the locating pin (B, Figure
37) in the camshaft.
Installation
NOTE
The camshafts in this engine are not
interchangeable. Each camshaft is
identified by a 1 or a 2 cast into the
body (Figure 38). The No. 1 camshaft
fits in the rear cylinder head; the No.
2 camshaft fits in the front. Make sure
each camshaft is installed in the cor
rect cylinder head.
1. If removed, install the locating pin (A, Figure
39) into the end of the cylinder head.
2. Apply molybdenum disulfide oil to the surfaces
of the camshaft journals.
3. Install the camshaft into the cylinder head so the
locating pin (A, Figure 39) aligns with the pointer
(B) on the top of the cylinder head.
4. Apply molybdenum disulfide oil to the inside of
the camshaft bushing (A, Figure 40) and install the
bushing (A, Figure 37) onto the camshaft. Position
the bushing so the cutout faces down.
5. Install the bushing retainer (B, Figure 36) into
the cutout in the bushing. Rotate the bushing as nec-
essary so the retainer's mounting hole aligns with
the hole in the cylinder head.
6. Install the camshaft bushing retainer bolt (A,
Figure 36). Torque the bolt to 20 N•m (15 ft.-lb.).
Inspection
1. Clean all parts in solvent and blow them dry with
compressed air.
2. Visually inspect the inside diameter (A, Figure
40) and the outside diameter (B) of the camshaft
bushing. Replace it if necessary. If the camshaft
