This chapter describes service procedures for the
following electrical sub-systems and components:
1. Charging system.
2. Ignition system.
3. Lighting system.
4. Signal system.
5. Switches.
6. Self-diagnostic system.
Battery and spark plug information is in Chapter
Three.
All electrical connections must be completely
coupled to each other. During electrical service, ap-
ply dielectric compound to all electrical connectors
when they are reconnected. This helps seal out
moisture and prevents corrosion of the electrical
terminals.
When testing electrical components, compare
any measurements to the specifications in the Table
1 at the end of this chapter. Replace parts that are
damaged, worn or out of specification. During as-
sembly, tighten fasteners to the specified torque.
Refer to Electrical Component Replacement in
Chapter Two.
Refer to the appropriate wiring diagram at the end
of this manual when working on the electrical sys-
tem.
CHAPTER NINE
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
The charging system consists of the battery, main
fuse, main switch, alternator and the regulator/recti-
fier assembly.
Alternating current generated by the alternator is
rectified to direct current. The voltage regulator
maintains the voltage to the battery and additional
electrical loads (lights, ignition, etc.) at a constant
voltage regardless of variations in engine speed and
load.
Troubleshooting
Refer to Chapter Two.

Current Draw Test

1. Turn the main switch off.
2. Remove the battery cover as described in Chap-
ter Fourteen.
3. Disconnect the lead from the battery negative
terminal (A, Figure 1).
4. Connect an ammeter between the battery nega-
tive lead and the negative terminal of the battery
(Figure 2).
