Serial Port (PPP) Details

Physical Connection

Connect a computer to the Master Alarm or Area Alarm Network
Communications Board with an RS-232 cable to the proper connector.

Serial Driver

Windows® typically wants to dial a PPP connection. In our case, we make a
direct connection. The driver, nullmodem.inf, makes a serial connection without
dialing. Install it according to the provided instructions (see "NULL Modem
Driver Setup Instructions for Windows® Operating System" on page 6–20).

Addressing

MedPlus TotalAlert® Alarm Network devices always use IP address 192.168.1.1
with a serial port connection. All of the Web pages that are accessible using the
Ethernet are accessible using the serial port. However, the loading rate is much
slower.

Accessing

Browsers can locate devices in the following two ways:
1. IP address
Example: http://192.168.1.1
2. Local name lookup
Example: http://Master400187
This method works on a LAN if your browser has the "Use NetBios Name
Lookup" option enabled, but will not work across routers to the Internet. The
name used is configured in the Device Setup Web page (see figure 6-10 on page
6–18). The Device Name, which is the word Master plus its serial number,
always works.
