Theory of Operation

The MedPlus TotalAlert® Alarm Network is a fully electronic monitoring sys-
tem. It monitors and displays the status of all piped gas and vacuum systems that
are in a typical healthcare facility by using Master Alarms, Area Alarms, and
Local Alarms that monitor the following:

If the network communications option (alarm Web page accessibility) is imple-
mented; you can browse, download, configure, and troubleshoot Master Alarms
and Area Alarms with a personal computer that is either connected to the facili-
ty's Ethernet or connected to a serial port on your personal computer (see
"Configuring and Browsing the Master Alarm by Using the Web Pages" on page
1–71). The alarm's Web pages are built-in; no setup is required.
The Master Alarm can determine which Area Alarm Module or transducer has an
alarm by using their unique serial numbers, but the source equipment has to be
set up by the user.
All of the alarm conditions sent to the Master Alarm are logged onto the event
log and can be downloaded by using either the RS-232 communication connector
or the Ethernet connector on the Master Alarm Module (see "Browse the Event
Log" on page 1–99).
If the network communications option is not implemented, the Area Alarm condi-
tions are sent to the Area Alarm event log and can be downloaded by using either
the RS-232 communication connector or the Ethernet connector on the Area
Alarm Network Communications Board (see "Browse Event Log" on page
1–127).
If the network communications option is not implemented, the Master Alarm and
Area Alarm work independently of one another. The Local Alarm is always an
independent component.
The Master Alarm monitors source equipment such as oxygen bulk supply, oxy-
gen and nitrous oxide manifolds, air compressors, and vacuum pumps. The moni-
tored signals are supervised in open-circuit loops.
