Intermittent Failures
The t e r m " i n t e r m i t t e n t f a i l u r e " means a system may
have had a failure, but it checks OK now. If the
malfunction indicator l a m p (MIL) on the dash does not
c o m e o n , check for poor connections or loose pins at all
connectors related to the circuit that y o u are
troubleshooting. If the MIL w a s on but then w e n t out,
the original p r o b l e m m a y have been an intermittent one.
Opens and Shorts
" O p e n " and " S h o r t " are c o m m o n electrical terms. A n
open is a break in a w i r e or at a connection. A short is
an accidental connection of a w i r e to g r o u n d or to
another wire. In simple electronics, this usually means
s o m e t h i n g w o n ' t w o r k at all. W i t h c o m p l e x electronics
(such as PCMs) this can s o m e t i m e s mean s o m e t h i n g
w o r k s , but not the w a y it's supposed to.
How to Use the HDS (Honda Diagnostic
System)
If the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) has come on
1. Start the engine and check the MIL (A).
NOTE: If the ignition switch is turned ON (II), and
the engine is not started, the MIL w i l l stay on for
15—20 seconds (see page 11-63).
2. If the MIL stays o n , connect the HDS to the data link
connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side
of the dashboard.
3. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
4. Check the diagnostic t r o u b l e code (DTC) and note it.
Also check the freeze data. Refer to the DTC
t r o u b l e s h o o t i n g and begin the appropriate
t r o u b l e s h o o t i n g procedure.
NOTE:
• Freeze data indicates the engine conditions w h e n
the first malfunction, misfire, or fuel t r i m
malfunction w a s detected.
• The HDS can read the DTC, freeze data, current
data, and other powertrain control module (PCM)
data.
• For specific operations, refer to the user's
manual that came w i t h the HDS.
5. If no DTCs are f o u n d , go to MIL troubleshooting
(see page 11-199).
If the MIL did not stay on
If the MIL did not stay on but there is a driveability
p r o b l e m , do the s y m p t o m t r o u b l e s h o o t i n g .
If you can't duplicate the DTC
Some of the troubleshooting requires y o u to reset the
PCM and try to duplicate the DTC. If the p r o b l e m is
intermittent and y o u can't duplicate the code, do not
continue t h r o u g h the procedure. To do so w i l l only
result in confusion and possibly, a needlessly replaced
PCM.
