VALVE GUIDE REPLACEMENT
Be sure to wear
heavy gloves
to
avoid burns when
handlmg the heattW

Using a torch to
heal the cylinder
head may cause
w,l(page.
Take care nor
to tilt
or lean the ref/mer
In
the gUide while
reaming.
Use Cuffing 011 on
the
reamer durmg
this
operation.

Mark new valve
guides
at
the
specified
height
indi-
cated below, using a
marker.
Chill the new valve
guides in a
freezer
for
about
an hou
r.
Heat
the cylinder head to 130°C_140°C (275°F-
290°F)
with
a
hot
plate or oven.
Do
not heat the cyl-
inder
head
beyond
150°C (300
e
n.
Use temperature
indicator sticks, available
from
welding supply
stores,
t
o
be
sure the cylinder head is heated
to
the
proper temperature.
Support the cylinder head
and drive
the valve
guides out
of
the cylinder head from the combus-
tion chamber side using the special tool.

While the cylinder head is still heated, remove
the
new valve guides f rom the freezer and drive
them
into the cylinder
head
from
the
rocker
arm side until
the
exposed height is at the specified val ue (at
the
mark).

room
temperature.
Ream the new valve guides.
Insert
the
reamer
from t he combustion chamber
side of the head and always rotate the
reamer
clock-
wise.

Clean the cylinder head thoroughly to remove any
metal particles aher reaming
and
reface the valve
seat
(page
8-14).
