TMS System Status

In addition to minor major alarms generated by a TMS, the NIC detects the state of a TMS card.
TMS states include:
• Booting State – A TMS is detected and is in the process of loading its runtime image. To
distinguish the TMS booting state, all LEDs for the TMS slot is turned on.
• Norma--TMS booted and no alarm conditions exist on a card. Normal LED for the TMS slot is
on.
• Boot Fail--TMS failed to exit the booting state after N minutes. A major alarm is logged for this
error.
• TMS Reboot/Restart/Down--When the health check between a TMS and NIC fails the NIC logs
a major alarm that the TMS is down.
The Booting and Normal states of the TMS occur only if no errors are encountered. A TMS enters
the Booting state only if power is applied and the TMS completed its initialization from the onboard
ROM. After a TMS loads its runtime image, the NIC queries the TMS alarms generated on start-up,
if none exist, then the NIC enables the Normal LED for the TMS slot.
If a TMS fails to establish a health check within 5 minutes of entering the booting state, the NIC
generates a major alarm for the TMS indicating the TMS failed to boot or load its runtime image.
If the health check between a TMS and NIC fails, a major alarm is generated indicating that a TMS
is down or offline. The NIC cannot distinguish between a hardware reset, a power cycle, or a system
crash. The NIC clears outstanding alarm conditions for a TMS only after the TMS reboots and
reports the NIC current alarm status.
The following modules can be affected:
• TMS Software
• TMS Hardware
• NIC Hardware
The following is a list of probable causes:
• System Boot failure
• incorrect entry in bootp table
• TMS image not available
• network connectivity
• Ethernet problems (Hubs, Switches, Cables, NICs)
• TMS Diagnostic image loaded which does not health check with NIC
