highways are connected through the local TSS to this set of external highways and completes the
audio path between the two lines. The application controls when the audio path is complete.
In a redundant pair, the NICs always synchronize the TSS connections. The slave is a hot standby
but does not attach the TSS I/O to the backplane. Failure of the NIC master causes the slave NIC to
enable the TSS on the backplane therefore recover any audio. Note that only one NIC can drive the
audio paths from the ATM at any time. ATM is configured in two independent redundant rings; audio
from one ring cannot be presented on the other. Therefore, a multi-chassis configuration requires
that the NIC masters be consistent, and all chassis must have the master in the same physical slot.
A path integrity is configured on one of the audio paths from each chassis. A ring is configured at
system start-up, and if the ring is broken, data integrity is lost and a failover from master to slave
occurs. However, if there multiple failures occur, the software selects the ATM ring with the fewest
errors.
Failure of the ATM interface on a NIC interrupts the audio paths between chassis. The NIC software
uses one of the 1024 channels to detect integrity of the ATM link. If a failure is detected on the ATM
link, an automatic failover from master to slave occurs.
Because inter-chassis bridging relies on the MVIP backbone, the path is susceptible to the same
faults on the MVIP bridging, see
The following is a list of possible fault causes:
• defective NIC ATM interface
• broken fiber
• ATM switch not or incorrectly programmed
• NIC not connected to correct port on ATM switch
• faulty ATM switch or power off
• intermittent problems, see
Troubleshooting
1. Force a switch from the primary to the secondary NIC to isolate whether a problem exists on
both rails.
2. Verify that all cabling is correct. In a multi-chassis configuration, the ports on the ATM
switches are configured at the factory. Each port has a unique address programmed for a
specific chassis and slot.
3. Check the integrity of fiber. The NIC and FORE ATM switches can be used as optical
continuity checks. Both the NIC and FORE switch have a Link Integrity check that illuminates
an LED if the fiber is broken. The LEDs verify only continuity but not configuration as in the
previous item.
4. Verify that the ATM switches are programmed correctly. The factory installation for
CTX/MPS contains the software for configuration.
