Backup and Restore

The MPS 1000 system is fully network-enabled. Management of data other than that provided in the
initial Avaya-installed system is the responsibility of the customer.
The operating systems employed in the MPS 1000 (Solaris and Windows) can be used with most
third-party vendors network backup software, but Avaya recommends you inform Avaya Technical
Support before you install the software.
Avaya assumes no responsibility for data loss but does support the restoration of the original system
software. The installation of third-party software to provide network backup, while not a violation of
warranty, is performed at the customer's risk. Any customer-installed software that introduces a
malfunction or degradation in performance, that requires service, is not normally covered under the
service agreement.

Backup and Restore for Windows Servers

The IBM x Series servers contain hardware RAID level 1 controllers. Disk mirroring is performed in
the controller hardware rather than in the software. The recommended approach to backup and
restore Speech servers is to use this RAID 1 capability.
If your site has Speech servers, a second drive is automatically included for the first Speech Server
of each resource type and language (that is, speech recognition, TTS, audio server, and so on) for
each vendor.
One option, which uses a disk drive and a drive sled, provides you with a solution for off-site storage
of backups. Insert the extra disk in the second drive bay of the IBM x Series server, which then
automatically replicates the data from the first disk to the second disk. The second disk (that is, the
backup disk) is then removed from the IBM x Series server and stored as a backup. This procedure
can be preformed for one speech server of each type or any number of speech servers as desired.
With the option involving the extra disk drive and drive sled, you can choose the degree of fault
resiliency as desired by ordering extra disk drives for each of your Speech servers.
The synchronization time for a 36 GB disk drive in the IBM x Series server is approximately three
hours (as observed by engineering during lab testing). This duration is usually of importance only
when field personnel use the disk to make a backup for off-site storage.
The RAID synchronization is performed in the hardware and is transparent to the Windows
Operating System. Thus, the system continues to operate in production mode while the secondary
drive is synchronizing. Typically, no operator intervention is required beyond placing the second
drive in the empty drive bay.
