CHAPTER 14. OSPF
Externally derived routing data(for example, routes learned from BGP) is
passed transparently throughout the AS. This externally derived data is kept
separate from the OSPF link-state data. Each external route can be tagged by
the advertising router, enabling the passing of additional information between
routers on the boundaries of the AS.
In OSPF, a single AS can be divided into smaller groups called areas.
This reduces the number of link-state advertisements and other OSPF
overhead traffic sent on the network, and it reduces the size of the topological
database that each router must maintain. OSPF network architecture is built
around hub-and-spoke topology where the backbone area(designated area id
0.0.0.0) provides the connectivity to the areas that attach to it. Small networks
can be accommodated with in a single area and large networks require multi-
level area architecture.
