d. Governor cover not tight, gasket damaged or leak
between case face and gasket.
e. Speedometer gear "0" ring damaged.
f. Manual shaft seal damaged or improperly installed.
h. Vent pipe (refer to item 5).
4. Leak at Front of Transmission.
a.
Front pump seal leaks.
(1) Seal lip cut. Check converter hub, etc.
plugged.
(3) No oil return hole.
b. Front pump attaching bolts loose or bolt washer
type
seals damaged or missing.
c. Front pump housing "0" ring damaged or cut.
d. Converter leak in weld area.
e. Porous casting (pump).
5. Oil Comes Out Vent Pipe.
a. Transmission over-filled.
b. Water in oil.
c. Foreign material between pump and case or
between pump cover and body.
LOCATION
Transmission-to-engine bolts.
Converter-to-flex plate bolts..
Crossmember-to-frame bolts.
Rear mount-to-transmission bolts.

breather.
e. Pump to case gasket mis-positioned.
*CASE POROSITY REPAIR
Turbo Hydra-Matic (M-38) transmission external oil
leaks caused by case porosity can be repaired with the
transmission in the car by using the following
recommended procedures:
1. Road test and bring the transmission to operating
temperature, approximately 180°F.
and locate source of oil leak. Check for oil leaks in
LOW, DRIVE and REVERSE ranges.
3. Shut engine off and thoroughly clean area to be
then air dry.
NOTE: A clean, dty soldering acid brush can be used to
clean the area and also to apply the epoxy cement.
4. Using instructions of the manufacturers, mix a
1360016, or equivalent, to make the repair.
NOTE: Make certain the area to be repaired is fully
covered.
5. Allow cement to cure for 3 hours before starting
engine.
6. Road test and check for leaks.
Speedometer driven gear retainer bolt.
Valve body-to-case bolts.
Spacer support plate-to-case bolts.
Manual shaft jam nut.
Downshift detent lever bracket-to-valve body bolts 16
Parking lock bracket bolts.
Oil pump-to-case bolts.
Oil pump-cover-to-pump body bolts..
Case-to-converter dust pan bolts.
Converter dust pan-to-case bolts.
Downshift cable-to-case bolt ;
