GENERAL INFORMATION
The steering system consists of a steering wheel,
steering column, steering linkage and manual or power
steering gear.
The new function locking energy absorbing steering
column, in addition to steering the car, includes the
ignition switch and lock cylinder assembly mounted on
the column and the important function of locking the
ignition system, steering and shifting mechanisms to
inhibit theft of the car.
If it becomes necessary to tow a car with the column
locked and the key is not available, a dolly should be
placed under the rear wheels and the car towed with
the front end raised. If a dolly is not available, tow the
car by lifting the rear end, providing the front wheels
are locked in essentially the straight ahead position
(the use of a steering clamp should
be
continued for
this
type
of towing). If neither of the above methods
can be used, disconnect the shift linkage and shift the
transmission into neutral, tow the car with the front
end raised.

CAUTION: On automatic transmission cars with the
shift lever located in a center console, the shift linkage, if
it war disconnected, should be reconnected immediately
after towing to eliminate the possibility of someone
unknowingly starting the car in gear. This could occur
because the neutral
-
start switch would not be refecting
actual transmission gear poqition. In the event the shlj?
linkage is not reconnected, adequate warning should be
posted on the car.
Manual steering with 24:1 gear ratio is basic equip-
ment on all models except Firebird V-8 engine models
with air conditioning. The gear ratio is 28:l on
Firebird V-8 engine models with
air
conditioning.
Power steering, available as an option on all models,
has a constant ratio of 17.5:l on Tempest, except
GTO. A new lower constant ratio of 15:I is used on
the GTO. Variable ratio of 16:l on center and 12.2:l
at full turn is used on all Pontiac, Grand
Prix
and
Firebird models.
An oil pump is provided to supply the power steering
system with pressurized oil. In order to provide proper
