Using the UNIX "vi" Editor

This section is not intended to be a complete tutorial on vi, but rather a very
basic overview. You should have a general understanding of how the vi
editor works before using it.
The
command displays a file and allows you to alter it. To open the file with read-
vi
only access, type
view [Enter]
1. At either the
[NETLINK]
(which will display helpful information along with the file, such as the
[Enter]
current edit mode; e.g., insert, delete).
2. Use the arrows on the keyboard to move the cursor. Once the cursor is where you
want it:
To insert text before the character at the cursor,
type
i(text) [Esc]
To delete the character at the cursor,
press
.
x
To replace the character at the cursor with another character,
type
(newchar) (with no spaces between
r
To replace the character at the cursor with a string of text,
type
s (text) [Esc]
3. To exit the file (whether or not changes have been made), press
4. To save any changes and exit, type
5. To exit without saving changes, type
