EMC DL3D 1500 and DL3D 3000 Administrator's Guide
The Path-to-Tape (PTT) feature is a licensed option of the EMC DL3D
and is used for duplicating backup images from virtual cartridges in
the DL3D onto media in an attached physical tape library (PTL) or
EMC Disk Library VTL. You cannot use this feature to copy NAS
backups - CIFS shares or NFS mount points - to tape.
Note: The Path-to-Tape feature is licensed. You must upload the license key
to use this functionality. See
about uploading the license keys.
A DL3D 3000 system has four Fibre Channel ports for SAN attaches
and a DL3D 1500 has two Fibre Channel ports. The default roles of
these ports are target ports. When you install the DL3D's
Path-to-Tape license or Auto Archive license, one port, FC Port 3,
becomes an initiator port. This initiator port is used to attach a
physical tape library or an EDL VTL that the PTT feature will use.
1. Install the DL3D VTL license on the DL3D.
2. Install the DL3D PTT license and Auto Archive license on the
DL3D. The presence of this license changes FC Port 3 from a
target port to an initiator port.
3. Connect the DL3D's FC Port 3 and the physical tape library or the
EDL VTL you will be using to a Fibre Channel switch.
4. Zone FC Port 3 to the physical tape library or EDL VTL you will
be using as the Path-to-Tape storage unit.
While connecting to the SAN:
Use single initiator, single target zoning by soft zoning.
Avoid hard port zoning practices with backup devices.
If this is a physical tape library or VTL with multiple FC target
ports, make a separate zone for each port for each initiator (DL3D
and media server).
Once the PTT license has been installed/enabled, FC Port 3 on the
DL3D is configured as an initiator port to support the PTT
function and cannot be reconfigured as a target port.
