Glossary
Disk
A fixed set of sectors with sequential numbers starting from zero,
directly and independently accessible and mutable by those numbers
without affecting any other sector.
DLT
Digital Linear Tape technology is owned, developed, and
manufactured by Quantum Corporation. DLT tape drives use
half-inch wide tape.
E
End of data (EOD)
An area that signifies the end of the valid data. If new data is written
over a larger quantity of old data, it is possible for data to exist after
EOD, but because it is after EOD, this old data is no longer valid.
EOD can be overwritten with data or file marks as long as it is not
coincident with EOT.
End of tape (EOT)
The last usable point on the tape. Also referred to as the End of Media
(EOM).
ESD
Electro-static discharge
F
File mark (FM)
A mark written by the host. It does not necessarily separate files; it is
up to the host to assign a meaning to the mark.
File system
An abstraction layered over storage devices (typically disks)
obscuring the physical details of the storage devices it supports in
favor of a presentation oriented at storing and organizing files.
G
Robot
A mechanical component of the extension axis assembly (robotics)
which grips and holds a tape cartridge in transit
H
Hard zoning
Zoning which is implemented in hardware. Hard zoning physically
blocks access to a zone from any device outside of the zone.
Host
The device or devices to which the library is connected.
