Sentry Network Control System Overview

1
The Sentry Control System is a networked system of display panels and machine controllers connected
by fiber-optic cable. This cable is non-conductive and is immune to electrical noise, providing high
quality communications.
Located at each machine is a Machine Controller. This unit performs environment control and
monitoring of the setter or hatcher. All instrumentation and control devices are connected to the machine
controller.
Sentry System displays are not located at each machine. Instead they are strategically located throughout
the hatchery. Any number of displays can be connected to the network; however, a minimum of one is
required for the system to function. Each machine can be accessed from each and every display. This
allows full hatchery monitoring and control from any display connected to the network.
All machine control and performance features are accessed from the display. This display is menu-
driven allowing the operator to change setpoints, cancel an alarm, enter graph data, change alarm
parameters, enter a profile, etc. The numerous features are detailed in this manual.
One and only one display may be setup as a Master Display. This is accomplished by setting a DIP
switch inside of the display panel. The Master Display is the unit that drives the network. It can be
identified by noting the word "Master" in the top left of the screen. There are several special features
that this unit can perform that are not available at other display panels. Features such as password
enabling/disabling can only be performed at the Master Display.
Each unit on the network must have a unique address associated with it. This address consists of a room
number, unit type and unit number, all of which are set up on DIP switches located on the individual
units. The unit type must be set correctly for proper machine operation. The unit type setting for the
various units is outlined below. Unit types 0 to 5 refer to multi-stage machines (tunnel machines); unit
types 6 and 7 refer to all machines; unit types 8 to 11 refer to single-stage (ACI) machines; and unit
types 21 and 22 refer to JM machines. Refer to Appendix C on page 112 for more details on setting the
addresses.
