The encoder read head has three major components: a light source, a
mask, and a detector (Figure 6.5-3). The mask is a small scale-like piece,
having identically spaced transparent and opaque lines.

If there is movement by either the scale or read head, light will be blocked
by any overlay, or pass through otherwise (Figure 6.5-4).
