TROUBLESHOOTING (DTC P0500)
STEP
1 Was ENGINE DIAG. FLOW TABLE performed?
2 Does speedometer indicate vehicle speed?
3 Vehicle Speed Signal Check
Is vehicle speed displayed on scan tool in steps 2) and 3)
of DTC confirmation procedure?
4 Signal Circuit Check
1) Remove combination meter.
2) Check for proper connection to speedometer at
terminal G19-6.
3) If OK, then check voltage at terminal G19-6 with
ignition switch ON. See Fig. 1.
Is voltage 4 – 6 V?
5 VSS (Speedometer driven gear) Check
1) Remove VSS.
2) Check resistance between two terminals. See Fig. 2.
Resistance between
two terminals
3) Check gear for damage and rotation.
Magnetic force should be felt when rotating gear.
Is check result in step 2) and 3) satisfactory?

: 300 – 450 W at 20 C, 68 F.
REFERENCE
at G19-13
Connect oscilloscope between terminal E92-27 of ECM connector
connected to ECM and body ground, and between terminal
G19-13 of combination meter connector connected to the meter
and body ground.
Check vehicle speed signal and VSS signal.
at E92-27
20 ms / Div.
YES
Go to Step 2.
Go to Step 3.
Intermittent trouble
or faulty ECM.
Check for intermit-
tent referring to
"Intermittent and
Poor Connection" in
section 0A.
Replace
speedometer.
"V / Y" circuit open or
shorted to ground,
"B / Or" or "V" circuit
open or poor
connection.
If wires and
connections are OK,
replace speedometer.

Go to ENGINE
DIAG. FLOW
TABLE.
Go to Step 5.
Go to Step 4.
"V" circuit open or
shorted to ground.
If wire and
connection are OK,
substitute a known-
good ECM and
recheck.
Replace VSS
