Diagnostic Tests

Echo Test — Validates that the node where the diagnostic is being run can communicate
I
with one or more remote nodes (not a Switch). Successful completion of the test indicates
that ServerNet II communication is occurring.
Topology Test — Compares the configured SAN topology with the actual SAN topology
I
and reports any differences. Successful completion of the test indicates that the SAN
topology is correct as configured and the nodes are active.
Routing Test — Validates that specific paths between the node where the diagnostic is
I
being run and other nodes and Switches are functional. Successful completion of the test
indicates ServerNet II communication is occurring over specific paths through the
ServerNet II SAN. Runs on the In-band Control (IBC) protocol.
NOTE: For a more technical discussion about how these tests work, see Appendix H,
"ServerNet II Diagnostic Resources."

Diagnostics Test Modes

You can run Diagnostics in either the batch mode (pre-packaged, pre-configured scenarios that
run automatically) or the interactive mode.
Batch Mode Definition
The recommended method for running Diagnostics tests is the batch mode. While running
Diagnostics in batch mode, you can do the following:
Perform an echo test to other nodes in the SAN
I
Perform a topology test to determine if the SAN topology is correct
I
Perform a link (routing) check to other nodes in the SAN
I
Perform echo, topology, and routing tests
I
Interactive Mode Definition
The Diagnostics interactive mode requires use of the command line interface (CLI, an interface,
provided with the ServerNet II software, that lets you enter commands to run Diagnostics);
some programming skills, and may require knowledge of ServerNet II IDs, machine names, and
routes. The interactive mode and its use is described in Appendix H, "ServerNet II Diagnostic
Resources."
