STARTING SYSTEM
FRONT AND REAR BRACKET BUSHING
Inspect the bushing for wear or burrs. If the bushing is worn
or damaged, replace the front or rear bracket assembly.
REPLACEMENT OF BRUSHES AND SPRINGS
1.
Brushes that are worn beyond the wear limit line, or
oil-soaked, should be replaced.
2.
When replacing the field coil brushes, remove the pigtail by
crushing the worn brush with pliers, taking care not to
damage the pigtail.

Sand the pigtail end with sandpaper to ensure a good solder
joint.
4.
Insert the pigtail into the hole provided in the new brush and
solder it. Make sure that pigtail and excess solder are not
on the brush surface.
5.
When replacing the ground brush, slide the brush from the
brush holder by prying the retaining spring back.
TESTING THE ARMATURE
TESTING THE ARMATURE FOR SHORT-CIRCUITS
1.
Place the armature in an armature tester.
2.
Hold a thin steel blade parallel and just above the armature
while rotating it slowly in growler. A shorted armature will
cause the blade to vibrate and be attracted to the core.
Replace a shorted armature.
